New Year’s Resolutions

I’m still trying to finalize my New Year’s Resolutions. This year I want to make them as measurable, actionable, and realistic as possible. Here what I think so far:

  1. Workout at least once every two days. Since I generally have hockey twice a week, it shouldn’t be that hard to either add another sport or hit the gym. I do allow exceptions for injury/illness or travel constraints.
  2. Learn to swim. I already took some lessons and need to practice. If I combine this with the above goal, it shouldn’t be that hard.
  3. Limit myself to one serving of “dessert” a day. Since we have so much good food at work, it’ll be tough to do this. On the home front, Crissy and I already decided to stop buying bad snacks at the grocery store (potato chips, cookies, etc.)
  4. Cut down on processed foods and bad carbs. This isn’t really measurable, but I found that if I keep this idea in the back of my head, I eat a lot better.
  5. Eat a healthful breakfast every day. Since we have breakfast at work, this should be fairly straight forward.

You’ll notice that these are all health/fitness related goals. I want to add some other types of goals too, but I want to have goals that I can achieve independently and most of the other areas in my life are very interdependent. For example, if I set the goal of “My investments out-perform the market by 5%,” a lot of external forces need to work in my favor.

I also want to write/blog more, but I don’t want to turn it from a fun diversion to a chore. Instead, I’ll try to use the “delayed post” feature (like with this post) and have some content queued up so there isn’t another month-long silence.
